Izakaya MEW: Izakaya For The Masses
Hello all my food loving friends. This is a quick post about Izakaya MEW in Midtown West. As you can see from the name of the restaurant, it's an izakaya, a drinking establishment that serves food to accompany the drinks. In other words, an izakaya focuses on its drinks. Compared to EN Brasserie and Sakagura, Izakaya MEW is a more casual and reasonably priced restaurant. All the stuff we ordered reminds me of something I would eat as an afternoon snack or as a midnight snack (hammered or not).
I ordered the Tuna Tar Tar Don, which is Tuna Sashimi with Avocado and Spicy Mayo over rice. Ok. Look at it and look at how beautiful it looks. After staring at it for a few hours, I was finally obliged to eat it. What's not to love about this? It's like a deconstructed spicy tuna and avocado roll, where you can choose just the right amount of tuna, avocado, and rice in each bite. I really enjoyed how the rice was actually vinegared. That made my day. The dish was a good appetizer for our main orders.
I ordered the Mentai Spaghetti with Cod Roe and Mayo. If you're interested in making it yourself, click here. It's easy to make! The mayonnaise makes it creamy and the cod roe gives the pasta a nice fishy flavor. Since it was so simple, there was something comforting and satisfying about this dish. It's a fairly light dish. I would eat this as a afternoon snack any day.
I also ordered the Oyako Don, which is simmered chicken and egg over rice. Again, another dish I would eat as a snack.
